Images from the 2000 Redwood Empire Bonsai Society Show

by Brent Walston

Introduction

The following images were taken at the August 2000 REBS Show. Some of these trees are pictured at REBS 98 Show. These photos are of a higher quality than the previous pictures. The Punica was new at the show in 2000. There are about seventy five tokonoma each year encompassing hundreds of trees. There are also displays of suiseki, workshops and demonstrations, raffles, a club sale and about a dozen vendors. It is held on the last weekend in August each year at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Santa Rosa California.

Enjoy!

Punica granatum This is a beautiful Pomegranate with a magnificent trunk. The lack of fine detail work indicates that it is still a relatively young bonsai (although a quite old specimen). It should only get better and better. Pomegranate
Juniperus occidentalis This Wester Juniper was pictured in the 1998 REBS Show. It has a nice deadwood-red bark contrast and excellent overall outline. The strong flared base is exceptional. Like the Pomegranate, its foliage also shows a lack of fine detail as this point. Western Juniper
Acer buergerianum A Trident Maple with a very strong trunk. It is styled in the classical 'Pine Tree' shape. Trident Maple
Olea europaea European Olive with an exceptional trunk. Large specimen olives are easily collected. Olive
Juniperus californica A very graceful collected California Juniper. Nice outline. California Juniper
Quercus agrifolia This is a Coast Live Oak, the California equivalent to the Eastern Live Oak, Quercus virginiana. A nice tree with a good strong base. The apex would probably work better if the left side were pulled down a bit. Coast Live Oak
Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku' I believe this is a collected Shimpaku Juniper, probably from Japan. It has great trunk movement, but the lack of a strong base, as is the case with most collected junipers, disturbs me. Shimpaku Juniper
